2012 In Review: Crunching the Numbers

We finally have the reports back from our 2012 programs and projects, and overall the numbers look great. The programs that have been around were better than ever this year, and the new ones went well enough that we plan on repeating them in 2013. Here is a brief recap of some of the more prominent, and newest, efforts.

A Greener SXSW Is Upon Us

For our second year in a row, SXSW is proud to host the Green Zone, a sustainable oasis located right amongst the bustle of downtown Austin at 7th and Red River St. Sponsored by Whole Foods Market for 2012, the transformed parking lot has everything one would need to relax and recharge. Festivalgoers will find cold refillable drinking water, native plants and furniture made from upcycled pallets, plenty of shaded seating, free wi-fi, heathy food options for sale provided by Whole Foods Market, AND free cell phone charging courtesy of Sol Design Lab's Solar Pump.solarpump-zer01-market-s.jpg The spot will additionally serve as a downtown recycling transfer center with the help of Ecology Action, working to keep Austin clean and environmentally conscious. Free and open to the public, the Green Zone will last Wednesday, March, 14 through Sat. March 17, 12-11pm.

Our First Annual Green Week

Here at SXSW headquarters we just completed a last minute, first attempt, at an annual Green Week. I say "attempt" because well, this is not the time of year to start anything new and strange around here. This is the time of year everyone has their eye on the prize (April), and their nose to the grindstone (March).

Up-cycling is the new Re-cycling

It is always better to up-cycle than to recycle. Recycling is a beautiful thing, but it does require a great number of resources, not the least of which are money and time. Up-cycling, on the other hand, can be as simple as changing the context in which a product is used. SXSW up-cycles whenever possible, and every year we are finding new ways to re-use the byproducts of our conference.
